History and remembrance are overwhelmingly present in people’s lives in the Republic of Macedonia. Events in the past are interpreted in a plenitude of ways, overlapping and colliding, depending on ethno-religious and nationalist politics in the country. Remnants of rigid and backward ideologies of the past mixed with newly discovered nationalist sentiments, values and identities strongly influence policies and practices at official levels, as well as culture, media and education.
